The "New" Prostate Cancer InfoLink Social Network

A Service of Prostate Cancer International

Hi all,

So after being made aware of the fact that not everyone knows what "Movember" is by my boy Arnon here, he suggested I start a discussion so everyone knew that I wasn't just looking for free event promotion and wasn't looking for $$ in my pocket.

As many of you probably know, Movember is an annual, month-long celebration of the moustache, highlighting men’s health issues - specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

The idea for Movember was sparked in 2003 over a few beers in Melbourne, Australia. The guys behind it joked about 80s fashion and decided it was time to bring the moustache back. In order to justify their Mos (Australian slang for moustache), they used their new looks to raise money for prostate cancer research… never dreaming that facial hair would ultimately lead to a global movement that would get men talking about a taboo subject – their health.

A Mo Bro starts Movember – the month formerly known as November – clean shaven, and grows a moustache all month long, garnering support from friends and family in the form of donations. What’s more, a Mo Bro is a walking billboard for the cause as his new look opens the door for him to talk about cancers affecting men – making the moustache a symbol, much like the pink ribbon is for breast cancer. Each Movember culminates in a Gala Partè in major cities around the globe where Mo Bros dress up to match their Mo, channeling the likes of Tom Selleck, Ghandi and Ron Burgandy, vying for the ultimate accolade: Man of Movember.

While growing a Mo is left to the guys, Mo Sistas (women who support their guys) form an important part of Movember by recruiting Mo Bros, helping to raise funds and attending the highly anticipated Gala Partés.

"What's the basis for my motivation?" (one of my lyrics) I'm young, and I'm looking to get guys my age to start paying attention to their health. Let's extend the life expectancy of our generation! Check out my "Middle of Movember" show in NYC on Nov12th @ The Bitter End, 10PM -- we'll be creating awareness and collecting donations all night.

Hope folks in NYC can make it out -- let me know if you'll be there, email me at management@zackborer.com

Good info. Thanks.

The discussions in the general forum are not noticed to network members. However, the discussions in the groups are. So if it's the younger men you want to communicate with, you may want to understand them and communicate with them. For this reason, it may be of some value to you to go to Younger Men group, find the Discussion Forum, and click the +Start Discussion button. Of course you can always just interact with them one on one.

FYI: our youngest prostate cancer patient on this network was diagnosed at age 31. And here is a video of another, diagnosed at age 37.

So how old are you?

Arnon

I'm 27 Arnon. I'm looking to do good here and it appears it's not welcome. Thanks for the support.

Good is always welcome. Because of your overt commecial agenda, which is unique on this entire network, we asked for clarification regarding how good results from your actions for prostate cancer patients. Thanks for clarifying.

Zack - what a great mission!!! Young men your age will listen to you. Maybe you can bring the message that PCa is not just an "old man's disease". Maybe you can help bring awareness to a younger generation. Maybe one day men will be aware of their prostate health as early as high school - no fear, but knowledge. Do you have any family history of PCa? Any family or friends you know affected? What organization do you support with the proceeds? Let us know how the show goes.

Hi Angela,

Thanks for the kind note, and yes, I'm hoping to be able to spread awareness amongst young men to put away the misconception that only my "father" or "grandfather" can get PC. My manager and close family members have been affected by PC so I've been indirectly exposed to it and watched close friends deal with it. Thanks for the support Angela! The show is going to be amazing (attaching the flyer).

Movember is an attempt by people world wide to raise money for Prostate Cancer and Male Depression. Last year in Australia, 125000 men took part and raised over $AUD 8,000,000. all member of this Network and their friends and collegues, should take part in the event.
The following link is one of many that reported on last years Movember in Australia.

Just because I cannot add a comment to the events page regarding the Movember issue, I thought I would comment here. It amazes me that so little knowledge is known by member of this Network, regarding the month of Movember and what it stands for. Maybe this explains why everyone knows what the pink ribbon stands for, but has no idea what the pale blue ribbon represents. We should praise all efforts made to raise awareness of mens Cancers , Be it Prostate or whatever.

Thank you John! I'm doing my best to do my part in spreading the word. Did a few newspaper things last week and will be on the local Fox TV affiliate tomorrow (Monday) morning bright and early. I'm clean shaven now and today, Nov1 starts my month-long moustache journey - I'll be taking a pic everyday and sharing it with everyone via my online sites to remind every day of November.

If you happen to be in NYC, please let me know, would love to add your name to the guest list for the event I'm having on Nov12th.

Thanks for the support!

Best,

Thanks Zack, for your kind invitation to your concert, i'm sorry that being in Australia and I am about to start a trail into a new drug to treat Prostate Cancer, I will not be able to take up your offer. It is great that you are supporting the fight against cancer and I wish you every success in your career, keep up the good work.
Maybe one day, the pale blue ribbon will be as well known as the pink ribbon, but I wont hold my breath lol.
Good luck with your Movember concert, I hope that you are able to raise the awareness of Prostate Cancer. Maybe you could sell to everyone who attends that night a pale blue ribbon. Every little bit helps.
I thank you again for your efforts.
Kindest Regards,
John.
PS. what kind of music do you play?, if you come to Australia I will definately attend your concert if you come to Brisbane.
