I currently live on Trinidad, in the SE Caribbean. However, I grew up in England, many decades ago . . .

Where are you located?

hi Folks. I am here following a warm invitation from Rick D. I have never done anything like this before--although I do have a little-used beast caled a Gym-Pro lurking somehwere in the house. Any ideas on getting me started, where I might look, how much I might sensibly do?

I strongly second Peter's advice (although I'm no personal trainer myself). I hired a very competent trainer earlier this year, who "got it" about limitations created by radiation and ADT. He concentrated on having me learn core exercises using mostly an exercise ball rather than free weights (although some of that, too.) After 8 sessions with the trainer I had a number of new exercise skills that I'm continuing to build off of. Currently, I'm doing sessions of 9 to 11 different exercises (usually 2 reps each), 4 to 5 days a week.

If you are going to start a weight training program PLEASE get yourself a personal trainer. It will be very hard to start by yourself and not get injured. There are complex movements involved. Get someone to teach you. If you hire someone CHECK THEIR RESUME. If they can't give you one don't hire them. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch. I was a person trainer in California for 11 years.

bon jour j-j:

resistance training is essentialy weight training ..... weight lifting; you can also use your body weight, for example in doing push-ups, squats or bench step ups.

the segal protrocol recommends 9 or more exercises three times weekly; half for the lower body and half for the upper body. if you are using weights, she recommends starting with 60% of the maximum weight you can manage for just one repetition of the exercise, and to do two sets of 10-12 reps.

feel free to be in touch if you need more help,

salut, rick

to follow up on my correspondence with Dr. Roanne Segal, a medical oncologist at the University of Ottowa who was a PT in her former life, i recently learnt that RESISTANCE training is more effective than aerobic training in countering side effects for men on ADT,
The following articles cited in an 'in-press' publication may be of interest:

as a result i have changed my workout regimen to four days of rowing and three days of lifting with a short row after if i have the energy.

here's an article i recently found while doing research while looking for hard research to support the necessity for exercise during ADT; I am a plaintiff in a lawsuit related to a serious ankle injury resulting from a cycling accident.

the research is from the JCO: Resistance Exercise in Men Receiving Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Prostate Cancer, Segal, R et al.
http://jco.ascopubs.org/cgi/content/abstract/21/9/1653

i am in correspondence with Roanne Segal, the lead author, who is a medical oncologist at the The Ottawa Cancer Research Centre.
