My husband was asked if he wanted a bone scan prior to surgery. Our thoughts are to have a bone scan if the surgery shows that the cancer has metastasized. Are we missing something here that we should know about?

I was just reviewing the Comment Wall and noticed the comment by "phil" on "How do you talk to friends?" My approach would be different and would begin "Let me tell you about prostate cancer........"

I couldn't understand absolutely? Do you ask for stopping plavix before biopsy? My answer is "yes" of course. BC there is an alternative as LDMH (Fraxiparine). Any Other!

I am very suspicious of prostate hygiene: click here.

Seriously, I have yet to see a single wound infection (knocking wood here) in hundreds and hundreds of radical prostatectomies. The likelihood of infection changes with patient characteristis, such as with vascular insufficiency ... which are not findings common in men having radical prostatectomy.

I am very suspicious of hospital hygiene.

How do you talk to friends?

I'm 6 months into active surveillance. I find one of my most amusing interactions comes in conversations with friends. Our conversations start out:
Hi Hi
How are you? (with just a slight emphasis on the "are") Fine
No, I mean how ARE you? (stronger emphasis) Oh- you mean my cancer. I'm doing well.
Silence...maybe some gulps or gasps...and on to a new subject.

I feel sad about being in a situation that makes some many people uncomfortable but I'm not going to play the game. I want people to ask but they should ask forthrightly. Isn't it time we all learned that there's no magic in the word cancer and it's only if we allow it that it has some power over us.

What responses have you tried?

Phil
