Hi Albert,

Sorry to hear about your feeling so sick on chemo; my depression and hot flashes don't sound so bad by comparison, and the ADT has been successful so far in keeping my PSA down to 0.1. I'll have another checkup and Lupron injection next month, and am due to stay on ADT through next September or so and then learn whether the radiation likely made any difference. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the both of us.

Happy New Year, and may 2009 be better than 2008!

Hello, Albert. I have never come across any reports that the Shingles virus varicella zoster occurred "because" of treatment for prostate cancer. However, that being said, I would not think it unreasonable to surmise that with a weakening of the immune system as the result a prostate cancer therapy that this virus could erupt earlier than it might have erupted otherwise later in life for those men who experienced Chicken Pox in their earlier years. By posing the question, I suspect you may have read the article I compiled to offer some background and considerations of treatment for those to whom this virus erupts. I did some research after learning of friends experiencing uncomfortable effects.

Dear Mr. Pugh,

It pains me to hear you say that so much of your masculinity has been taken away. My husband feels the same way. It must be terrible to feel this way. There is so much more to a man than just sexual performance. You, my husband and so many men in the same predicament are still very sexy :) So don't let yourself get down on this, there is light at the end of the tunnel and life will take on new meaning. The best is yet to come! My Best Patricia

Thank you for your comment Mr. Pugh,

My husband's last Trelstar injection was in April 2008. I have not seen any marked improvements with memory. Hopefully, in the next few months his memory will improve. He has had high blood pressure almost all his adult life and he does take medication. I do believe he is depressed and I would like for him to see a doctor. I read about your cancer and I am very hopeful for your cure. My best to you and your family, Patricia

Importantly, Albert, as a Veterinarian, you are in a position to better understand and appreciate the importance of the various medications administered as part of prostate cancer treatment. Your input of your experiences in dealing with your cancer will be important to those following in our dubious journey.

Maybe you have a distant cousin here. There is an Orange, VA so I thought just maybe you were the man I wanted to talk to.

Thank you for responding.

ALbert

Pre-Surgery my PSA was 8.67 Post-Surgery 0.11. It steadily rose for a year until mid-2007 when it started to increase more rapidly. End of October 2007 0.64, End of November 0.88, End of December 1.26. I started the taxotere and Lupron 1/2/08. PSA dropped to undectable within 2 months. It is currently undetectable. I hope that answers your question.

Best of luck,

Bill

Profile Information

Have you been diagnosed with prostate cancer?
yes
About Me:
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in Dec 2006. My initial psa was 17 and initial biopsies had Gleason scores of 4-4, 4-5 and 5-5. The CT and bone scans were clean so PRP performed early Jan 2007 with no nerve sparing per the surgeon. 6 weeks post op my psa was 25 and rechecked 1 week later it was at 30. I was stated on Casodex with a referral to MD Anderson Cancer center in Houston. They recommended IMRT and started me on Lupron injections. I had the radiation treatments (37) from April thru the end of May 2007. I took the Casodex for 6 weeks initially. In July 2007 my psa was 35 and was started back on Casodex. Since July the psa has decreased to 1.9 in Dec, same in Jan and was started on Avodart in Feb 2008. In Mar 2008 the psa was 1.6 and then started on Ketaconazole + Hydrocortisone. I have an appointment with another radiation oncologist in Houson on April 8
Update: All my repeat scans in April were normal and psa was down to 1.4. Will continue on Lupron and Ketaconazole/HC and monitor the psa. In June my psa was 1.9 and concerned of this being a significant rise or just a speed bump. We will recheck the psa in Aug and if continues to elevate, then looks like a round of Chemo...I have started on Cymbalta for the depression and feel much better since starting. My sleep habits are what are considered normal and the last 2 Sundays I have actually taken a day time nap which is the first I remember taking in my life... Maybe I am just getting old at 56...I also have my hypertension under control now.

I am now riding and training 4 horses for dressage competition and that takes up all my spare time.
