All the above terms have the same meaning. In the past Watchful Waiting was the term used. Then recently someone decided calling it Active Surveillance described it more accurately. The key to this is the PSA. if the PSA rises slowly then WW or AS…

I have had PCa since 1997 and have facilitated a Man to Man Prostate Education and Support Group since 1999. Your numbers indicate a slow growing cancer. It takes a Gleason Score of at least 7 to have what is considered an aggressive cancer. Urolo…

John, I have been on intermittent hormone therapy since 1998. My usual on cycle has been 9 months. I stay on the off cycle until my PSA nears 5.0. It has only been in the last year that signs of "hormone refactory" are present. I did not choose to t…

About Me:
I am 78 years old & was diagnosed with PCa in May of 1997. My PSA had jumped from 2.4 in Oct. of '96 to 4.8 in April of '97. My Gleason score was 7 (4+3) The pathology report indicated two tumors with an indication that the cancer had left the prostate. As a result my urologist would not do surgery & suggested radiation, which I had. By early 1998 my PSA started to rise rapidly again & it was obvious that the radiation hadn't worked. I had another biopsy and the result was the same prognosis as the first pathology report.
I started intermittent hormone therapy (lupron). My on cycle was a 9 month cycle and I'd go off the lupron until my PSA got back to about 5.0. This worked until Feb. of 2008 when my PSA doubled in a 4 month period, this happened even though I was on the lupron.
As a result my urologist and I realized that I was becoming hormone refractory. I continued on the lupron and the increase of the PSA was less than double for a couple of times. Finally in January of '09 I decided to quit the lupron because I was tired of the debilitating side effects.
My career was as an educator. I taught social studies (history) for 30 years, all of it in one school district.
I have facilitated a Man to Man Prostate Cancer Education and Support group since August of 1998. We average 20 -30 people a month at our meetings. I have close to 200 men who have attended the meetings. Some only a few times and others for the whole 11 years.

Bradley,
Terrific you putting so much back into the PCa cause with Man to Man. I know what you mean about the Lupron and its side effects. I have been on for 13 months. A lot of Cognitive loss. Hope it comes back. Need my brain, I think at age 76. Take a look at www.pccac.wordpress.com and see if you might be interested. Keep in touch. George
