I was diagnosed in Dec 2008 at age 58. PSA 3.8 prompted urologic consult. Retested, PSA was 6.7 (different method, but still quite a jump). Biopsy showed 1 core of 10 positive with 30% Gleason 3+3 = 6. DRE normal. Second opinion on slides by OURLab, , GS 6, but the 1 positive core 40%. Prostate size 34 grams.
My urologist said I was in a gray area – on the young side for AS, but could not recommend treatment as superior based on statistics. He said his study showed that there was an 80% chance I would die of something else, and his feeling that would be 90% today. Here’s the study: http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/reprint/293/17/2095
So I’ve been on AS taking PSAs every 4 months. Since that time, it has been hanging around 5.0.
I took a color Doppler in May. Traditional MDs say it has no value. According to the dr., it showed the same small thing going on. Also had an MRI that showed no extracapsular disease.
There is a lot of reports coming out on diet and cancer, and diet and prostate. I am working with an ND. But I would like to find a urologist with an interest in complementary medicine. For example, I’m considering Aaron Katz at Columbia Med Center in NY. But I would like to find someone closer. I keep searching the web for complementary interested urologists listings, but have not found any. Anyone know of good urologist in central Connecticut?
I’ve been interested in the work of Otto Warburg, Dr. Joanna Budwig, and Dr. Simoncini.

Personal information: I was a teacher of math and science for 12 years, then went into institutional fixed-income investments, eventually managing bond portfolio, with emphasis on mortgage- and asset-backed securities. I was very selective in sub-prime mortgages, and refused to buy CBOs, considering them misunderstood by most players. After 20 years, I retired in 2005 to move to my next career (just in time!). Currently, Program Coordinator of Masters of Arts program in Conscious Evolution: Personal and Planetary Transformation, and pursuing doctorate in Transformative Studies at CIIS.edu.
