Dear Fred: You could consider inquiring about a surgical implant (an artificial sphincter) to solve your problem. They really do work, and well, if the operation is carried out by someone who really knows what they are doing. We were able to assis…

Fred,

My situation was identical to yours (read my profile page) except for the family support issues. I think you should find a local support group and get your wife and daughters to attend a meeting or two with you. They definitely need some education about your condition. Check for a chapter of UsToo International (www.ustoo.org) or Gilda’s Club near you. I continue to derive much benefit attending such sessions even after nearly five years post-op.

My incontinence nearly broke my spirits but was resolved successfully with surgery more than a year after my RP. I’d be more than happy to discuss it with you. In the meantime, Debbie has offered some sound advice. In addition, I used to compress a Depends in a small plastic baggie which I could carry concealed in my pocket. Upon changing, I would place the saturated diaper in the baggie, tie it at the top and dispose of it. It takes time to figure out how to cope, but you will.

Keep the faith and don’t hesitate to reach out for help.
