You caught me at sort of a "benchmark" time. It has been exactly one year this week from my surgery. I am doing awesome, with very little lasting effects from the surgery. My sexual function, though not to "pre-surgery" levels, is good enough for normal sexual relations. I have no issues with bladder control, except an occasional couple of drops expelled during a violent cough or sneeze, but even then, only usually if i am really tired physically.
I am doing the gym 4 or 5 days a week, participating in a "fitness boot camp" at 5:00 a.m twice a week, and "X-Biking" (Google that one) 2 days a week. Compared to where I was a year ago...Life is GREAT!
My weight is dropping and i am getting stronger and stronger.
I figure if prostate cancer is no longer a threat to my life (I sorely hope anyway), that I better make sure I don't open the door and invite heart disease into my life!
You take care, and I am so glad to hear that you have the gift of time to make any decisions that you might have to make. When you consider that even a couple of years may open brand new avenues in treatment for you....Well, that is just darned exciting news for you my friend!
By the way, yes, I have 3 children: a 33 year old son that is an Army physician., about to deploy to Kuwait, with a wife and 4 children (twins in the mix). A 27 year daughter that is married to an active duty Marine, stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, and my "baby" a 23 year old daughter who is an actor with the Salt Lake Acting Company, living with her best friend in Salt lake City.
(1) I think this is a good decision. You may well have to deal with something later, but so long as you are assiduous about regular visits to see Stephenson (or Klein), I feel very confident that they will do whatever they can to help you "manage the risk" as opposed to just taking the "slash and burn" approach.
(2) With respect to the diet thing. One can become overly obsessive about all of this. A good heart health diet (lots of colored fruits and veggies and low on the red meat) -- "sorta Mediterranean" if you will -- is a good prostate health diet. Some people swear by flax seed and soy protein and other things. My answer to all that stuff is "if you like it it certainly won't hurt" (but I don't thing being obsessive about all this help either; one is meant to enjoy life, not count every antioxidant calorie!). With respect to the pomegranate juice. If you like pmegranates, eat them. If you like pomegrante juice/extract, drink it. Again, it won't hurt and it may do some good.
(3) Take up a regular exercise regimen to whatever extent you can manage.
