Was doing great post Brachytherapy for 5 years, ED wise (age 57), with the help of Levitra. Then had a recurrence, more treatment and now ED is back. I was on Simvustatin the entire period.

But how do you differentiate those needing early treatment and those who don't? Having become aware of my cancer aged 43 there was a lot of encouragement to go for treatment, when the clinicians themselves didn't really have a lot of experience o...

PSA Update post Brachytherapy

Saw consultant yesterday and PSA was down from 4.5 to 0.9 after 5 and a half months of brachytherapy. apparently this is very good. IPSS urinary symptom score less good at 20, but then I have stopped taking tamsolusin in favour of Saw Palmetto which doesn't seem so effective. The plus side is that I have more energy back so its swings and roundabouts.

Treatment update

Last PSA level 5.0 (but has been as high as 5.5)

Prostate volume study undertaken 24/2/09. Results fine and implant scheduled for 10/3/09 but feel very tired following PVS - could be side effect of general anaesthetic, drug side effects, or just life!

Started on alpha-blockers to improve urinary flow and counter usual expected side-effects of urinary retention with lose dose permanent implants.

That is a very interesting note about Flomax. I've noticed that I became more fatigued as the dosage increased... but that also meant I had been receiving radiation for a while longer. I should be decreasing the dosage in about a week

Guy,

Good advise. You are right about staying positive. It gives you the right perspective on what your facing in life. Thanks again for the encouragement. Keep in touch. Have fun at the beach.

Guy,

Thanks for adressing the age thing. Not to say in any way I would think less about the side effects if I were older...it's just I'm struggling to get my mind around thinking about the "stuff" that is invovled in regaining fuction ect.

Dx at 43....how did you find out? Mine was completely accidental. They didnt like a DRE they did on me ,sent me to a Uro. He agreed. My PSA 1.5 totally normal. Cancer found on the non-suspious side of the prostate. No symptoms other than a slowing when I urinated for about 2 or 3 years. That was one of the issues that brought me into the Doc. in the first place.

So we need to make up some awesome PC info. with young guys doing manly stuff like combat shooting at a range or finishing a two mile swim in a tri-atholon or something.....lol. Thanks again for the encouragement.

Maybe better to put up with the tiredness. Not sure when you had it done and how many seeds, prostate size etc but if it was around January it should be settling soon.
For me the worst was the first 4 months. Stopped Xtral (Generic Flomax) at about 31/2mths and still take Saw Palmetto from time to time. Only problem I still have is the occasional need to get up, (up to 5 times), on the odd night. (Related to alchol or fluids the evening before?) otherwise can get through most nights now with only 1 visit to the toilet.
Orgasms, at 9 months, although still burning a bit,in fact seems better than before! Although a little still comes out (Cowpers Glands?) it is mainly dry and quite wierd.

Good luck!

Guy75,

Now into month 9 of Brachy and not too bad. My PSA at 6 months now down to 7.5 and finally going in the right direction.
No incontinence, (my greatest fear), less up and down at night, orgasm burning less and the sexual apparatus is getting stronger.
Was advised on the .net to stimulate to erection at least once daily 'so it does not forget.'. (But no need to go to orgasm) I think this has paid off. Some also suggested viagra which I did not do but did take the odd herbal stuff, for what it was worth.
Sorry about late reply. Only saw your comment today.

Hope all going well with you.

Phil:

I am following your path: I will have the gold implants put on in two weeks and then I'll go on vacation overseas before I start radiation. Hope all goes well for you.

Hi Guy,

Yeah you're right, we all seem to have a different focus for our worries: either ED, incontinence, fatigue, and in my case, I worry about the options that we have once our prostates have been "fried" by radiation. All in all, I feel my attitude should be more "play to win" (i.e. get cured) than "play to contain losses" (i.e. worry about all that can go wrong), yet, we cannot ignore the second as the side effects have a significant effect on our lives.

I decided on external radiation and left for an overseas vacation after making my appointments for the start of the process. I've just gotten the gold implants (earlier today) and will do the simulator in a couple of weeks. I'm feeling great and very pleased with my decision.

Thanks Guy
just back to main land fla, last night. Had a wonderful time in key west. A bit cool but nice to leave the "real world" behind for a few days.Wedding went off w/o a hitch. Thinking about calling for my scan test results but not sure if they will discuss them over the phone. We still havnt told anyone of my condition.Mainly because theres still some things we dony know yet.As today is my 50th,maybe i should just sit back and enjoy the last few days of my "normal life " as it used to be. Thanks agian for your support. This site will becomming a bigger part of my life in the very near future.

Hi Guy,

thank you for your offer for a chat that I gladly accept.
I am currently in the 'get opinion' phase and got 5 already spread from Malaysia (because I lived there the past 2 years) via India to Germany, to Milan to Madrid (One day, I will write-up all of this) ... Besides, that this is really interesting it is very confusing and some of your experience will certainly help my decision making process.

I have added you as a friend and hope we can chat soon.

All the best

Andy
