Dan, Thanks for the well wishes. My doctor is also pretty young, I would guess somewhere around 35. I believe he did post residency work at Johns Hopkins and now he teaches this stuff at Harvard Medical School, Despite being so young, I felt comf...

Steve, I had the laparscopic surgery about a year and a half ago. My psa was higher than yours (5.8) but my gleason was similar (mostly 6 with a little bit of 3+4 "7"). Time will tell on any type of psa rise in the future but at 13 months post su...

Recently, I have seen reports that suggest that ground flaxseed, which is rich in omega 3 fatty acids and lignans, is beneficial for the prevention AND treatment of prostate cancer. Specifically, these studies report that a low-fat diet supplement...

I am now 49 and was 47 when I had the surgery back in May of 2008. I had what appears to be an unusually quick recovery from an ED perspective... the rubbing of the catheter made me hard two days after surgery. My doc said that was probably the qu...

Congrats. You must be very relieved although I thought bone scans were typically performed on people with very high psa's. Did your doc tell you why he thought a bone scan was necessary? My doctor didn't recommend one although before the surgery h...

About Me:
48 YO White Male, Had physical exam in Feb 2008. My new doc suggested a PSA test given my family history (my father and my maternal uncle had prostate cancer). Had biopsy in March, came back positive, mostly Gleason 6 but some 7. Had laparscopic radical protesectomy in May at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. The surgeon was Dr Andrew Wagner. Path result - stage pT2C, Gleason = 3+4, unremarkable seminal vesicles, margins are free of carcinoma. nothing found in lymph nodes.

Just had 6 month PSA, still undetectable. Great doctor and team. Had erection 3 days after operation, incontinence nearly gone (an occasional drip). Very happy with result

Diet - have pretty much given up red meat, dairy and egg yolks, except special occasions. I guess I am now a vegan who will eat fish and occasional egg whites. Drink 16oz of POM Wonderful, pomegranate juice a day. Luckily, I love the taste. Try to eat brocolli and fruit alot. Have lost 20 lbs and am feeling great.

Update 6/11/2009 - Just had 1 year PSA check, still undetectable. Doctor says come back in 6 months.

Hi Jack,
I really spent a lot of time going over the different treatments and decided surgery is the way I will go. I have made an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic with a doctor who does robotic surgery.
You have given me hope that all will go well.

Gary.......behr5227 Get it?

Jack,

Thanks for the info.on diet. My sec. is always on my case about this issue. She is a farm girl is somewhat overweight, smokes, but will eat nothing out of a can or fast food. She will probably out live me by 10 years.....lol.

I'm 177 6'1 work out and don't have a weight issue but hear you on making my diet more healthy. Couple things...what does the pom. juice "do" for you and I read your awesome profile.(you should run for "poster child" of pre-op success stories ) but what was your PSA at time of dx?

Thanks again for your help and suggestions....Pray you continue to do awesome.

Hi Jack,
you are absolutely right. Based on the biopsy I indeed was checking for less invasive options (HIFU) but in the end was convinced that the only chance to get cured was RP ... Reading the post-op report now I am really glad that I made the decision for RP. Especially as I was lucky and not suffering from any of the infamous side effects.

Maybe it would be a good idea to do a study (if not already done) on Biopsy vs. post OP results. It really seem to be very frequent that the Biposy is more positive ....

Jack, we're close (I'm down in the southcoast in Dartmouth Ma ) . We're almost identical stats , I'm 51, post surgery gleason 6, also pt2c. Had L.R.P. in Boston also . I went to Boston magazine's archives "Best Doctors" as voted by health professionals and ended up at MA General. Never needed the pad , no problems with erections, started to have semi's next day after surgery. Did your surgeon put you on Cialis therapy just to help blood flow to area ?
I too have become vegan and saw great fat reduction, the book some have mentioned on here "Anti cancer A NEW WAY OF LIFE " by David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhDis great ! I re-read chapters often , he gives a great perspective as a brain cancer survivor .There's a whole chart in the book on specific high cancer-inhibition foods, and great advice about getting vitamin doses from foods and not relying too much on only pills .
BTW U.S. News &World Report ranks hospitals and institutions as to their ability and reputation in treating different disorders, John Hopkins was #1 for Urology .
