Profile Information

Have you been diagnosed with prostate cancer?
No
What brings you to the New Prostate Cancer InfoLink social network?
Hubby just diagnosed on Oct. 21st after an elevated PSA of 6.9, an ultrasound and biopsy. Biopsy results positve. Gleason scale number of 7. CT scan scheduled for this Monday and a bone scan the following Monday. My hubby was alone for the results and of course did not hear much after the word "cancer", so we have lots of questions for the doctor this week. Have researched treatment options and know that making that decision is going to be the hardest. Don is 60 years old, very healthy other than a 30 year history with kidney stones. Recently had some gallbladder discomfort and went for a complete physical. Found some elevated cholesterol, slightly elevated blood pressure. Had a gallbladder ultrasound, no findings and a colonoscopy, all clear. So,we were just so optimistic that the prostate biopsy would be negative as well. But the news was not what we wanted. So our journey begins.
Would you help us grow the network? Would you tell others about it?
yes

I don't know Dr Bugg (so "world renowned" may be a bit of an overstatement), but the second opinion is a good idea and 75 miles is not exactly the ends of the earth!

You do really need to get a copy of the original pathology report, however. This will give you a lot of information that is currently "missing." You are entitled to a copy of this report and you need to "badger" the original urologist for a copy of this report.

Dear Julie: I am sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis, but on the "upside" your own work will have given you a great understanding of how to think about and assess the available options.

It is important that you find out several things when you meet with the doctor today: (1) Was the Gleason score 3 + 4 = 7 or 4 + 3 = 7? There is a big difference. (2) Was there any sign of a tertiary Gleason grade 5? (3) What is his clinical stage? (It is probably T1c, but you need to be sure.) (4) How many biopsy cores were taken, and how many of those were positive? All of this information will be in the pathology report sent to the doctor, and you are entitled to a copy of this, so make sure you get one.

Don't let anyone rush your husband into a treatment decision. You have time to do your "homework" first.
