Ron & I have been using soy products and ground flax seed since 1/08. Ron's never had horrendous hot flashes - just a few minor ones each day - and they didn't start until his 9th month on Lupron. Having said that, I've been on low-dose antidepres...

I laughed out loud when I read this because it describes what's been going on with us for almost 2 years! I, too, thought I had put the hot flashes behind me. I used to hear about men getting "sympathy" labor pains ... I wonder if this is what we...

Jean - we got the information to temporarily discontinue supplemental antioxidants during radiation from the nutritionist, not the doctor. Keep up the calcium & D if Wendell's started hormone deprivation, though. I understand that since Ron finish...

Would you help us grow the network? Would you tell others about it?
Yes!
About Me:
My husband was diagnosed in November 2007 with Gleason 8 (4+4) prostate cancer, PSA 8.6 (doubled from 4.1 in 24 months). His treatment plan is 2 years ADT (Lupron) and 43 EBRT sessions (completed in April). His first post-radiation PSA was 0.1! I'm still trying to learn & research!

December 2008 - 2 more PSA tests, both <0.1 and only 2 more Lupron shots (April & August)! We're still trying to deal with the impact on his cholesterol levels and his cognitive abilities.

April 2009 - PSA is holding at <0.1! He had his next-to-last Lupron injection and we don't have to see the dr. again until August!

14 August 2009 - the final Lupron injection and another PSA of <0.1! He doesn't go back to the doctor until February. To celebrate, we're leaving on the 30th for 6 weeks in Germany & Ireland!

Hi Kay,
Thought I would share with you that when I had cadrio-Vascular issues last month they decided that I should be taken off Hormone Therapy. So since, I was on a 28 day period of Degarelix I have now been of 50 days, having been on for 13 months. My t is still at 30 but I seem to be recovering some of my cognative losses. Sort of like a fog clearing up in my mind. Remembering directions in driving, law case information, multi tasking. I believe that not only are some of these caused by loss of testosteron, but also by the chemical make up of the Lupron, Degeralix, etc. The drugs themselve also poison the body and mind as well. So...maybe it is all going to come back. Good thought huh? George

Hi Kay:

Is a DEXA scan the bone density scan? If so, we had one done. I insisted on it as a baseline for his bone density. It was a good thing, though he is only 55 he is already in the beginning stages of bone density.

Good grief Kay, you have done an awful lot of work for us. Thank you we really appreciate it. I was telling Rick D. that we went to the radiologist today and when I asked if there was something we should be doing to help the radiation work or to ward off side effects. He basically just said to eat healthy which is what the urologist said to us. This is soooo confusing. When I let the radiologist know that I had read that the mediterranean diet was good for this type of thing he replied that it was good for warding off cancer. I then asked if that included cancer recurrence and he said it wouldn't matter that much. That doesn't make sense to me. Unfortunately,
Wendell was so pleased that he went out and had fish and chips for lunch! This reasoning is like telling a smoker to stop only if they haven't had cancer already.

Thank you for the ammunition, I shall have a little chat about it all tonight when poor old Wendell comes home from work. :)

Don't rush too much Kay, it looks like we are in this for quite awhile. I appreciate you putting something together.

We have received nothing in regards to nutritional information. I asked the urologist and he basically said to "just eat healthy". Good grief! We are trying to go onto a mediterranean type diet...olive oil, fish, chicken, lots of vegetables. Unfortunately I cannot get Wendell to eat grains or pasta. Our support group had a local nutritionist in for a talk but she did not seem to have any special nutritional tips for us. That surprised me. As for exercise, we joined a gym this weekend and Wendell is considering a trainer. Very expensive all of this, but thankfully we can afford it.

I would appreciate any tips you have on nutrition Kay. I keep thinking that there must be more to it than what I am hearing. Hope everything is going well for you and your husband. Jean

Oh Kay, thank you for telling me what you and your husband have experienced. I know that there are others out there who have gone the path that we are just taking, but we certainly feel alone at this point. I am currently reading "How We Survived Prostate Cancer: What We Did And What We Should Have Done" by Victoria Hallerman and that seems to be helping but there is nothing like having a diaglogue to glean information and support.

We had read about penile rehabilitation from "Saving Your Sex Life" by Dr. Mulhall and though my husband's urologist had not heard of this we asked him to prescribe Viagra so we could try this on our own. The premise is much what you talk about with the Cialis but Wendell (my husband) started taking low doses two weeks prior to surgery. Post surgery he is still taking it, and once a week he takes a full dose. Of course his Urologist has not mentioned anything to do with sex life and prostate cancer. That is something that I am having to investigate on my own. I had no idea whether he should continue to take Viagra while on hormone therapy or not. It sounds like he should if we are to have any hope of intimacy post hormone treatment.
As for diet. I understand that a Mediterranean type diet is the best. Wendell has always been a real meat and potatoe person, which is probably one of the reasons that this is happening. It is very difficult for him to go to grains and vegetables and to use meat as a flavouring. He also is checking into strength training to prevent osteoporosis and to keep a more masculine figure. He is a corporate comptroller so I am extremely concerned about any cognitive changes that he may go through.
Enough of us, I am wondering how you are Kay. What have you done to fight all of this? Or to keep your emotional strength up?

Hi Kay,
In relation to B12 supplementation the following article may be of interest.
No newer information is available on this topic as far as I am aware.
Best wishes,
David

Plasma folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine and prostate cancer risk: a prospective study.

Hultdin J, Van Guelpen B, Bergh A, Hallmans G, Stattin P.
Department of Medical Biosciences, Clinical Chemistry, Umeå University Hospital, Umeå, Sweden.

The role of folate metabolism in cancer development is a topic of much current interest, with maintenance of adequate folate status tending to show a protective effect. Aberrant methylation, primarily hypermethylation of certain genes including tumor suppressors, has been implicated in prostate cancer development. Folate, vitamin B12 and homocysteine are essential for methyl group metabolism and thus also for DNA methylation. We related plasma levels of these factors to prostate cancer risk in a prospective study of 254 case subjects and 514 matched control subjects. Increasing plasma levels of folate and vitamin B12 were statistically significantly associated with increased prostate cancer risk, with an odds ratio of 1.60 (95% CI = 1.03-2.49; p(trend) = 0.02) for folate and 2.63 (95% CI = 1.61-4.29; p(trend) < 0.001) for vitamin B12 for highest vs. lowest quartile. Increasing plasma homocysteine levels were associated with a reduced risk of borderline significance (OR = 0.67; 95% CI = 0.43-1.04; p(trend) = 0.08). After adjustment for the other 2 plasma variables, body mass index and smoking, a statistically significant increased risk remained only for vitamin B12 (OR = 2.96; 95% CI = 1.58-5.55; p(trend) = 0.001). Adjusted OR for folate and homocysteine were 1.30 (95% CI = 0.74-2.24; p(trend) = 0.17) and 0.91 (95% CI = 0.51-1.58; p(trend) = 0.60), respectively. Our results suggest that factors contributing to folate status are not protective against prostate cancer. On the contrary, vitamin B12, associated with an up to 3-fold increase in risk, and possibly also folate, may even stimulate prostate cancer development. These findings are novel and should be explored further in future studies. (c) 2004 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Hi Kay,
Now here is another wild tip. Having had a difficult time dealing with the ADT3 and the hot flashes, memory and the like, I went to the Center for Integrative Medicine, Univ of Colo. Hospital on Colfax and I 225. Dr Lisa Corbin. She stated that she had some money for Acupuncture for 6 sessions free. And she reported that people had said that it really helped in ADT3 treatments. So with no out lay of cash, I opted for it and had my 4th session last Thursday. Well, let me tell you, it really helped. especially the fourth session where he put some one week tacks in to my ears. I haven't had a headach or hot flash since last Thurs evening. Amazing. You also get some mediation counseling, a pharmicist consultation and some other ideas. I really thought it was very helpful. Try calling 720-848-1090. Dr Lisa Corbin, and Dr Ban Wong. It could be worth it. Mention my name. George
