Chef Hughie's Lycopene-Rich Tomato Juice Cocktail

My husband reminded me that today is the first anniversary of the passing of HUGH RICHARD KEARNLEY (1951-2007) of Glasgow, Scotland, "Hughie" to his friends. As if I could forget. Hughie was my first Internet conversationalist and a soulmate of sorts. The most gifted person I *never* met. Ted and I came to really love this man. I know there are other people here who knew and loved Hughie, too, so that's why I am posting this.

Hughie died of a heart attack, but the real cause of death was prosta… Continue

Where Is Our Michael J. Fox?

I had an upsetting experience today and that's why I am writing this. I got up early in the a.m and, read my mail as usual -- and began to cry. I'm embarrassed to say this because I pride myself on not being a crybaby! We Brooklynites are very tough. And besides, I read pretty nasty stuff every day.

I was reacting to a letter I got from a woman about a piece I had posted on my blog the other day. The subject was the role of younger men in prostate cancer advocacy (see "Where Is Our Michael JContinue

Newbies: Where NOT To Look For Love

There was an article in yesterday's New York Times which is being widely circulated, in which the author describes his thought processes as he went about first choosing a treatment and then a doctor after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Trouble is the guy doesn't know anything but speaks in an authoritative tone. He’s a newbie who thinks he’s Ralph Valle or Terry Herbert. But didn’t we all?? I think this article is important to read because I see so many SMART men (and women) maki… Continue

The "Minor Complication" That Dares Not Speak Its Name

All serious illnesses cause emotional distress. But prostate cancer patients are even more vulnerable. This is because treatments for PC often causes erectile dysfunction (in at least 50% of men who've had RP, e.g.), which is highly correlated with depression. Also, some men who've undergone treatment have been left with distressing side effects like penile shrinkage or Peyronie's disease (curvature of the penis). Finally, ED *can and does* cause serious damage to patients' relationships.

Incon… Continue

Dear Leah,

Thank you and your husband for the message too for thinking of me.
I hope you are both fine. I hope the headache is gone and your're feeling better.

I have to take time and do some research as you suggested on yahoo groups.

I'm very sceptical myself in terms of alternative medicine- for instance acupuncture or natural/herbal nutrition. But as an oncologist recommended those drugs and also acupuncture being familiar with my dad's case, I have more faith. And I see that dad is better these days.
The radiotherapy this week was for the hip area,.. leg and now the pains are gone there. After taking now one week off radiotherapy he will continue the sessions for the spinal area.
Last night dad had awful pains in this area. As he told me today: "I thought that was it, I thought I would die".
But generally these past few days, he was better.

I want to see him getting some weight back on his body and feeling much better and spirit up a bit and then do some computer scan to see the vital organs-. I'm afraid though. I fear the worse as he says he doesn't have appetit and feel nausea and being so weak,.(before starting radiotherapy).. .After walking 500 m or so he must seat down and rest. He wasn't like this two months ago.
He spent most of this summer in the Western Carpaten in a small chalet and did some work in the garden, building some fence,... He was very active.

I hope he will feel much better. I have to keep faith and believe that he'll be fine. But I'm not denying the painful truth and I know the course of this disease. I had people close to me that died of cancer. I saw them better, raising hopes and than,.............. .
Anyway, I have to think positive.

Leah, thank you again, wish you a very nice weekend with much love and smiles all around you and good health.

Talk to you soon, take care,

Cosmina

Dear Leah,

Thank you for caring. I loved your message, it made me feel better.
I have a question: what is palliative radiotherapy? My dad just started radiotherapy- is it the same thing? The sessions ( for the whip area,..) which last for about 5 min will end this week then take a pause for one week and start again another 5 sessions every day for the spine area.

I've seen an oncologist last week that works with palliative treatments in cancer cases and recommended dad some drugs like Maitake, Boswellia, Cordiceps,.. 5HTP,.. anc also acupuncture to deal with the bone pains.
So, dad started the acupuncture session yesterday. He will do around 10-15 session(20 min each).

Do you know something about this? What do you think?

Leah, I will look on your blog and the links you sent me.

Looking forward to hearing again from you, you're very kind.
It feels good to see people that understand what you're going through.
Wish you a sunny and peaceful day, all the best,

Cosmina

Hi Leah,
Not sure why you can't comment back on my blog, but it's ok when you write me too. That picture was taken 14 years ago at Disneyland. Jeff, my son, is all grown up and living on his own. I hope all is well for you, too!

Thanks for the offer of "friendship" Leah. I also found the conference call useful. I must admit though that Dr. Saunders points will have to hammered into my brain again and again. Reversing roles will not come easily to this 55 yr. old couple. My husband started hormone treatment today. I understand that the side effects are pretty immediate so it was good timing on the call. I felt sorry for him, we were not told that he would be starting treatment today and he was not emotionally ready for this. I thought he was going to cry. Surgery comes and goes, but this is at least a 2 year journey of continually living with cancer treatment. It is so hard to sit by and just watch isn't it?

Hello Leah:

I have to ask, were you involved in the conference call with Dr. Alicia Saunders and Women Against Prostate Cancer? If so, what were you thoughts on this? Jean
