William, I suggest that you take a look at the discussions on the Chemotherapy + Prostate Cancer Group. The combination of chemo and ADT is an option to consider when location of the micrometastasis is unknown. Early results of trials have shown th…

Have you been diagnosed with prostate cancer?
yes

Would you help us grow the network? Would you tell others about it?
Yes. I have already done so and will continue to.
About Me:
Diagnosed 8/4/06(59 years old)) - Gleason 7(4+3) verified by 2nd pathologist, T1c, PSA 34, tumor on right side only. 2 months on ADT in preparation for IMRT as advised by urologist and referred oncologist. Subsequent test results (MRI,CXR, bone scan) showed no visible extracapsular extension. Used the 2 months on ADT to clear the fog left by being diagnosed and to educate myself on the different availble treatment options. Decided that best solution for me at that time was surgery. On 12/12/06 Dr. Krongrad performed LRP. Post-op upgraded to Gleason 9(4+5), pT3aNo with tumor intrusion into periprostatic fat, but negative margins. Right side only tumor confirmed. PSA<0.1 2 mo. after and, 0.1, 6 mo. after surgery. PSA has been steadily rising eversince. My oncologist has advised that it is time for the next step.

61 years old, married for 36 years (same wife), 3 daughters, expecting first grand child in June 09. Hobbies: Karate, wine, food

Thanks for the blog comment. It's great that you're sharing your recovery with me. That gives me hope that my symptoms will get better. My internal Doc put me on stronger diuretic, so we'll see if my tree trunks turn back into feet and ankles.

Please keep me up to date on your progress. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Hi Lenny,
Didn't know you were taking the Chemo path. You and John are bringing in the big cannons and taking a stand. I would appreciate reading your contemplated posting of how you are doing. Wishing you the best and any time you take an opponent on head to head you are going to do some damage. Win this one Lenny for all of us. We all got your back covered. George

Thanks for the comments. I am still recovering from the surgery and only get on-line occasionally. I have not received my pathology reports yet from the surgery. Hopefully good news in a few days. I do feel like I did the correct thing as far as getting the surgery. Time will tell. I appreciate all of the support from everywhere, friends, kin, internet and people I do not even know. IT seems we bond as former (present) prostate cancer fighters.
Hope all goes well on your end. Continue the fight, it is winnable as many have proven.
thanks, cb

Hello Lenny, glad to hear that you are doing better. At least now you probably can return to enjoying food again as you noted in your bio that one of your hobby is food. Gotta keep fighting. You have alot to fight for. Keep in your life.

Lenny; Have you looked into radiation? IMRT/IGRT?

I have 14 more IMRT treatments to go. All of the articles I've seen say radiation followed by ADT have a good result.

Hi Lenny;
<...RT, are you doing ADT? If so, how long is your treatment ...>

I will be starting hormone deprivation therapy mid February for 12 months. At the same time I will also be starting Chemo (Taxotere) once every 3 weeks for 6 months.

The hormone therapy was suggested by my surgeon. The chemo was my decision based on input from other doctors.

The hormone therapy will deplete your muscle and bones. Now is the time to do weight training to build your core muscles. there are threads on this site that will give more details on this.

Good luck! Positive thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
