I certainly would appreciat any help I can get with insurance issues. I would like to receive proton therapy for my prostate cancer, and reffered myself to LLUMC. My insurance company informed LLUMC that they will only cover 55% of what they deem...

Radiation has been associated with longer survival (vs no treatment). There are lots of data regarding survival after radiation. To be clear: There are no good randomized comparisons of radiation and surgery with each other or with no treatment. I...

Dr K. Thanks for your thoughts. I know you are a surgeon, but to help me better understand, would radiation also be a treatment that only offers biochemical control? And if PSA is not a surrogate for survival, is surgery the only treatment that ...

William: As Dr. K. (rightly) accuses me of saying: "Information is not knowledge." You are focusing on the wrong issues. I can show you papers that say everything under the sun, but those papers are not focused on getting the most appropriate trea...

So many points, so little time. And with your brain "fried" I am reluctant to keep going. So briefly ... The whole point is exactly what you said: A lot of information. But as Mike says, information is not knowledge. And I would add that knowledg...

I guess this is why it is so confusing to us, the patients. I truly appreciate the help you all offer, but there is always conflicting information about everything from soy, selenium, vitamin E, and flax seed to the type of treatment is best for m...

I have no idea. HIFU is hardly heroics when there are so many data for other treatments that are approved and covered, so I cannot imagine that argument working. The other question is why push for HIFU, about which little is known. There are no s...

Be super careful with HIFU, William. It's not FDA approved. If you get authorization, get it in writing.

OOPPS! Thougt I had sniffed out a predator. Please continue with your presence on the Island and I shall figure out things with my psychiatrist on friday. I thought about blaming it on Lupron but maybe I better just chalk it up to stupidity. Like Dr. K said , too fast on the draw. I will have to slow down. So here is the message I should have sent.
"Hi Maria,
So wonderful to see you here, welcome to the site. I am glad you are one of us and we look forwand to engaging with you on health care and the like. There are lots of friends, info and support here. Mike and Arnon have really established a wonderful sight where we all can make either intelligent or stupid, dumb, classless comments. Our choice. Sometimes we choose wrong, but not always. WELCOME MARIE, just checking ya out George

Maria: In my family, professional, and social circles I have the reputation of not speaking unless I have something to say. The same holds true in this network. I spend a fair amount of time reading the stories/comments of others, and on occassion feel compelled to add my two cents worth. This is one such occassion. I can't apologize for George, but I can offer a counter-point. In every way you are welcome: as a healthcare professional, a future spouse, a woman trying to understand. Your insight and comments are welcome, too. Especially as they relate to the healthcare machine. In another life long, long ago I was in healthcare admin. for 23 years (don't tell George. I, too, want to stay on the island). The machine ground me up and spit me out. But that's a story for another day. Let me just leave it at saying that if progress is to be made in improving the health of our nation/world and in fixing the healthcare delivery system, we need meaningful imput from all stakeholders. I'll even go so far as to say that we even need George. I'm not sure what triggered his comment. But I know what triggered mine. Please stay plugged in. We need your input.

Maria - I see only "the boys" have greeted you thus far. Welcome to our network. It is indeed an excellent place for validated information and support. I look forward to your input, and I'm following with interest your conversations with Mike and Arnon, my fearless partners. Thanks so much for joining us. Maybe we'll have the opportunity to meet one day soon. Angela

Maria: It's been a while since I talked to him, but we do have an acquaintance in common other that Arnon.

Several years ago I worked on a project with Bill DeMarco. Actually it was so long ago that I can't remember anything about the project!

I hereby appoint you to the official position of "reality enforcer" for Arnon, whose fantasies of a perfect world are all good -- and largely deluded!
