Hello, Dr. Consedine, and thank you for your reply. It is not that I have questions of you at this time since I have spent countless hours in research and study of our insidious men's disease for the past 12 years. It is more that I like to keep in touch with others who have an interest in prostate cancer and can then have the opportunity to bounce concerns off them for their consideration and comment. In so doing, we both become better educated regarding prostate cancer and its treatment.

Hello,

Dr. Krongrad suggested I make contact with you as a medical professional who may on occasion provide information of interest to me and who may find interest in my research, study, and advocacy regarding prostate cancer. You can learn more about my prostate cancer and advocacy background by accessing

There are many of us on this network who are reaping the consequences of procrastination or out-and-out denial. If you have any insights or advice in this area, would you consider starting a group for those of us who don't seem to have insight into why we continue in a demonstrably unhelpful pattern of denial and avoidance?

Nathan, are doctors reluctant to make recommendations? Notice that in many cases the responses to a clinical scenario is "tell the patient to go learn more." This is fine but not a substitute for a recommendation. We have two scenarios. The "Atypia" discussion in Biopsy and Other Tests gave many different recommendations. Then again, the current discussion in Younger Men (see Nature of Prostate Cancer in Young Men) is producing evasion after evasion: retest the PSA, give him antibiotics, tell him to read ... all efforts that seem designed to wish away a PSA result. Are we afraid to recommend? Is there such a thing as doctors reluctant to be specific? If you have thoughts, please post on the Nature of Prostate Cancer discussion. Thank you.

Dr. Consedine’s research interests are diverse, but ultimately reflect his early training, focusing on understanding the role of emotions and emotion regulation in health and health behavior among demographically diverse populations. He has conducted numerous studies examining the relations that emotions, particularly fear and embarrassment, hold with breast and prostate cancer screening frequencies. In the last 7 years he has published more than 50 papers and chapters in the area of emotions, aging, and psychosocial oncology and health and is currently developing an interest in extending his agenda to include interventions research.
