You absolutely should not be concerned about "hurting your urologist's feelings." If he does not understand that a patient may want a second opinion, then I wouldn't want him as my doctor anyway.

If you feel you need to, you can make it clear to him that the fact that you are getting a second opinion has nothing to do with your trust in him. Rather, it has everything to do with your own trust in yourself to make the best possible decision!

Do to the Mayo and get that second opinion. THEN you will be in a far better place to be able to make your own decisions about what you want to do.

Ooops. I mewant to add the following ... HOWEVER, these are very personal decisions, and you might want to consider getting a second opinion from a specialized urologist (maybe at an academic medical center) who has significant experience of tracking men on active surveillance protocols, since this is an evolving area of research.

The additional info you ptrovided on my page suggests to me that youy might be a very appropriate candidate for active surveillance (which is similar to but NOT the same as "watchful waiting; see the descriptions on the main web site).

Hi Stephen:

(a) It would help us to help you if you could give us a little more info about your diagnosis. Things that would be helpful are: your PSA at diagnosis, your Gleason score (e.g., 3 + 3 = 6), your clinical stage (e.g., T1c), the number of biopsy cores taken, the number of positive biopsy cores, and any other significant health info (although I note your statement that you are in generally good health).

(b) While I certaionly don't criticize Don for pointing you to his blog about proton beam radiation, please be very careful to bear in mind that what may be appropriate for otherr patients may not be appropriate for you. There are mant effective forms of therapy for early stage prostate cancer today, and they all come with at least some risk for side effects. Patients who do well (and some of those who do badly) in response to specific forms of treatment can sometimes become particularly fervent supporters (or naysayers) regarding their own treatment, but the best attitude is one of slef education prior to making one's own decisions.
