Tom, I remember drinking it. It wasn't too bad. I remember it was like a soda with a slightly salty-sweet taste. I remember kinda liking the taste of it! Good luck with your procedure.

Tom:

Whatever decision you come to about treatment, you likely have at least a few months before there is any serious risk that the cancer is going to progress outside of the prostate. However, you would be wise to try to come to a decision about what to do within 3 months OR make sure that you have talked to your current urologist about regular PSA and DRE tests while you are coming to a decision (i.e., a temporary active surveillance protocol), but remember, I am not your doctor so this is just an "informed opinion" not medical advice!

So now let's see if we can give you a little info that is more specific to you.

First and foremost, you need to start thinking about your prostate like the high-performance sports car (Lamborghini, Maserati, Aston Martin, Shelby Cobra?) you always wanted to own. There's no way in heck you would ever take that car to Joey's Garage on the corner for servicing. You'd take it to a specialist. You need to do the same with your prostate!

Second, I have plugged all your data into the Kattan pre-treatment nomogram, which gives the following results:

-- You have an 81% probability of cancer that is confined to your prostate (organ-confined disease) and which is therefore highly curable.
-- If you have surgery carried out by a well-qualified surgeon, you have a 96% probability of progression-free survival after 5 years and a 94% probability of progression-free survioval after 10 years.
-- If you have brachytherapy (seed implantation) carried out by a well-qualified physician, you have an 86% probability of progression-free survival after 5 years.

These all look like pretty good odds to me! You certainly have some time to make a good decision about what you want to do.

There is LOTS of straightforward info about treatment options on the main site in the section on management. If you have questions, that's what were all here to help with.

To find men of your own age to talk to, try putting "age, 58, 59" into the SEARCH function and see what you get. If you can't find anyone, don't worry, I'll find a couple of people for you!

:O)

Hi Tom,
Welcome to the site. PCa is a tough time and you are certainly approaching it in a good fashion.Reading your info it appears that you would qualify for several different treatment options, so take time to feel each one out. Remember if you talk to a surgeon, you will get surgery options. A radiation oncologist = radiation options. Yes, overwelmed is a very good word we all have used. This site has a sister site. Go to main page and look on the left side and click on the blog. There is an excellent, how to get started section here. If you have trouble finding it let me know.Get second and third opinions from the doctors. Take time to educate yourself. You will find lots of support, info and friends here. Just settle down and get tough. We are brothers in arms here. And you are going to make it. Your friend George. Get back to you.

Hi Tom. Let's see if we can give you a little help to set you on the way.

First ... It is well worth using the SEARCH function at the very top right of every site page to look for things that might interest you. This may take you to various different groups or discussion forums where you can simply "join in" and leave messages and questions for people.

Second ... Of you click on Forum in the upper navigation bar, you can start your own discussion by clicking on +Add a Discussion.

Third, you can start your own blog, which will allow people to comment on it.

Fourth, as people leave comments like this on your page, you will be able to reply to those comments by clicking on the words Comment Back immediately below the comment itself. This will take you to the original commentator page where you can leave a return comment.

If you spend 20-30 minutes playing around, you'll work it out pretty fast. It's not as complicated as it may first appear.
