Dear Victoria:

There is increasing discussion about the appropriateness of testosterone replacement therapy for prostate cancer patients. There are two basic camps. One group of researchers still tends to think it is a really bad idea because of the risk of stimulating growth of any cancer cells that may have been left behind after treatment. A second and smaller group thinks that it is effective, has merit, and (although it comes with some risks for some patients) should be offered selectively to patients for whom their sex life is a critical part of their life.

The most prominent advocate for the latter point of view is Dr. Morgenthaler, but the bottom line is that this is something you and the man you are dating need to discuss with his urologist because exactly how he has been treated has some impact here.

In the meantime, you might want to consider getting your date a copy of a book entitled "Saving Your Sex Life" by John Mulhall, MD, who is a specialist in the treatment of sexual dysfunction in patients treated for prostate cancer. The link takes you to the Amazon.com page through which you can purchase a copy of this book (which many men and their partners swear by).
