Hey Steve, Dr. Krongrad posted this HIFU in your section and called it "Too Good To Be True." I have been trying to contribute by demonstrating from my own experience that, sure enough, many aspects of HIFU are, indeed, too good to be true. Also, I…

Dear Mike, A needle biopsy is not a painless procedure and GPs in Canada(and probably in the U.S.) wouldn't order one unless there was a possibility of PCa. If you had a PSA of 0.6, like Molly's ex, and a good DRE but you were still worried about PC…

Hi Molly, GP's will often, as a next step after DRE and PSA, order a TRUS to take a closer look at the prostate. If the TRUS detects numerous lesions, the GP will order a biopsy. The TRUS cannot establish the presence of PC but it determines whether…

Hi Molly, TRUS stands for "transrectal ultrasound" and is used to take a better look at the prostate, measure its size, and detect calcifications and other hypoechoic lesions. If the lesions look suspicious, the observer would recommend a biopsy. Th…

How is prostate cancer diagnosed? What does the biopsy mean? Do other tests measure risk or establish diagnosis?

Hi Steve, I still don't know how to use this system. Is there a place that would teach me what the icons and "Follow" and how B, I, U, S, etc. work; will my comment be sent even if I shut down my computer before the 15 min. limit? Do you think my c…

Steve, I added this to my last note to you before the 15 min. limit but it didn't show up: TURP+HIFU is recommended instead of HIFU alone to reduce the chances of painful side effects in both Sonablate and Ablatherm procedures. THe only times it mig…

Hey Steve, This is a very interesting point you raise. When I first looked up the Maplr Leaf (Ablatherm) HIFU web site in 2007, they were also poohpoohing the pre-TURP and saying that it was intrusive and that they did not require one for prostates…

Geeze Mike, You start by insulting us as "re-inventing the wheel" and now you come back with "I said/you said" false argumentation to prove that you were right when you were wrong. I thought these discussions were meant to help others with pointers…

Steve, You don't seem to get my point. Chaussy's paper is not only about strictures. He shows very large reductions in frequencies ofall HIFU side effects- obstruction time (epicystostomia), obstruction by necrosis and/or stenosis, any incontinent s…

Hi Walter. The use of a TURP prior to HIFU was certainly recommended in earlier years, but appears to be less common now. I am no expert, but this may have something to do with the improving technology. I'm sorry to hear that your treatment came with problems, what sorts of adverse events did you experience?

Hi Walter,
Happy to have you as a member and also as a contributer. Welcome. There are several men who have had HIFU and would appreciate your sharing with them. I was treated with IMRT and finished last November, some side effect still are bothersome. Welcome aboard. George

Dear Walter:

Welcome aboard. It is interesting to see the numbers of men who have been opting for HIFU. Since you don't mention it, I assume that your treatment has been successful to date and that you have a low and stable PSA now. That would be good since you appear to have been at the "higher risk" end of the HIFU spectrum pre-treatment.

We look forward to you contributing knowledge from your experience.
