About Me:
recently diagnosed psa 4.5 and lump on dre. w/ stage b2 prostate cancer.Biopsy positive in 5 of six sextants in 12 core biopsy. Gleason7 ( 3+4) a month before 50th b day and 2nd wedding :( Looking at radical prostractomy after scans and wedding . I know am in for a long and bumpy ride

4-20-09 ralrp.Surgery went fine. released following night.Aside from some stomach aches and bruising getting along fine.
4-30-09 Met with dr for cath removal.Oh what a relief! The cath really wasnt as bad as i had invisioned. I wasnt prepared though for the actual removal procedure. After the nurse poured what felt something like 5 gal. of steril solution down my cath and into my bladder i thought it was going to burst.I told her i felt quite full and was fearful of 'blowing out"my new plumbing.Everything came out as expected

Path report...The best possible.Everything came back negitive..sem.ves,lymph,etc. Appears to have been contained. Still 3+4=7I guess now we get a 3 month vacation from this journey till late july for first post-op psa. Between the cath. removal and path report i feel so very blessed and thankful this part of the journey is behind us. Now on to continence issues.I cant express enough what this site has meant to us.Great people, information and support. Thanks to all of you!

Turner: Some things start to give one a very different perspective on the word "normal."

Turner ... It may be nothing (the black and blue issue) but call your doctor and tell him anyway (if you haven't already). Better safe than sorry!

I am sorry ... CORRECTION ...

Walking to the fridge for certain TYPES of beer may be classified as LITE exercise (and is indulged in only by those who don't understand what beer is meant to taste like!)

Hey Turner ... Glad to hear you are back home and things went well. What on EARTH did you find to eat in a hospital that allowed you to put on 10 lb? Did someone leave an entire suite of surgical instruments in your abdomen?

Good luck when you have your follow-up meeting. And start light exercise as soon as you feel up to it. (NO! Walking to the fridge for a beer is NOT light exercise!)

Great to hear you had a good time! In terms of telling people, I personally found it helpful as I got lots of support from people, as well as to hear other people's stories which helped put my own in to perspective. But then again, this is a very personal decision and privacy can help preserve emotional space and energy. But what ever you do, I hope it goes well for you.

As a follow-up to your comment about "emotional-mental issues" on the young men group page, I found a bunch of interesting stuff which you can find bookmarked at http://delicious.com/guy75/cancer+psychology

Hi Turner

just like to add another welcome and comment on the choice of treatment.

I found the nomograms Mike mentioned interesting, although as Mike has said elsewhere, the decision on treatment is as much about your individual choice of physician rather than the general effectiveness of treatment (i.e. surgery vs radiation vs HIFU etc).

Related to that, you also need to consider your individual case and how that impacts on likely outcomes. For example, the stats used in the original comparison of survival outcomes had not been validated for men under 55 (I don't know whether this is true for the current model they have).

Anyway, hope scans go well, and even more importantly that the wedding does too! While the PCa can throw you a curve ball, life goes on (even if as you imply the mental side of things can sneak up on you). For me, its made me think about working harder at staying healthy and maintaining my personal relationships.

Hi Turner,
Thanks for the complement. I have learned more from this site than I have from reading about 6-7 books on PCa.When you are diagnosed with PCa it changes your life. Its very devastating, however, some how you learn to focus on the things that really mean something to you and when you hear other's stories it toughens your resolve to fight back. You can survive! And you will begin to see it as a badge of honor among your fellow survivors. We all lean on each other here and like Mike said,'find a great surgeon" they are out there. George

Hi Turner,
Very happy to see you found us. Welcome to the site. There are lots of friends, support and assistance here. Mike is the guru, along with others, that can give you the straight scoop. Regardless of treatment, go for the best you can find, its out there. It may be a bumpy ride but you will be a survivor. Hang in there! George

You might want to add the PSA data and the family history to your "About Me" above. Also how many biopsy cores were positive out of how many taken? It will help to give people perspective (and save you from having to answer the same question multiple times!) Hang in there. You'll be fine. Just get yourself a damn good surgeon!

Do you know how to use the Kattan nomograms?

Think of your prostate like a Lamborghini. You don't want to get it serviced by Dave's Garage down on the corner. It needs to be cared for by a really expert!
