Profile

Have you been diagnosed with prostate cancer?
no
What brings you to the New Prostate Cancer InfoLink social network?
It was time to meet the neighbors.
Would you help us grow the network? Would you tell others about it?
Yes. Wouldn't everyone?
About Me:

I am a prostate cancer surgeon. In 1999, I co-authored the Technical Manual on laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and introduced it to the United States. Why? Because relative to open surgery it is less painful and less bloody. Whether you call it minimally invasive, laparoscopic, or robotic, the operation I refer to is challenging. Done well, it can get a man on his feet in a few hours and out the door in less than a day -- with an average of two Tylenols and no transfusions.

If you have questions, please call me at (305)936-0474 or send email to ak@laprp.com

You can also speak with my assistant. Her name is Hope.

Thank you.

First of all, Arnon, do you know why my question didn't show up as a new discussion? That's how I wanted it. I can't even find my post on the site. Would like to get maximum replies.

In response to your question, I posted something on the blog about your new site, recommended it and I will do so again. I like the way it's working out.

As far as recommending you site to individuals, online PC talk is not for everybody. The advantage for me is meeting interesting people from all over the world and making new friends. Also, got some good inside info from pts. However, if I had to do the last 2 yrs over again, I probably wouldn't want to get involved with PC talk. Knowing too much has made me a nervous wreck at many points along the journey. And there are guys like my husb who prefer to be in denial as much as they can.

There are people in these groups who are true obsessives, who sit around all day doing nomograms and looking at prognostications. That's not for me. I looked at husb's long-term survival stats for SRT, it said 25% (initially), and that actually made me sick to my stomach.

What I would wish for this particular "patient" is for him to graduate from the "club", walk off into the sunset and never have anything to do with PC again. Why should he be aware of everything bad that can happen to him? That's what you find out when you read broad-based forums like these. You have to know just enough to to take care of yourself.

Also, this "patient" would freak out if he read the Tertiary 5 stuff. I have been corresponding with him for 6 mos. and he is a very nervous type. He is also rather young, has complained of having had heart problems along with PC, and is currently a little overwhelmed by everything.

I get a lot of letters thru the blog from people who want info about a specific situation or just someone to listen to them, but once their issue is resolved they want to move on.

Having said all that, you made me reconsider. Maybe this site is right for J. and the other folks. It's a judgment call.

My compliments on what you have done with the site.

I wish you could help me with the substantive question I posed re this particular guy. If I said something to him about my concerns, he would follow up with his doc and the doc would just say everything is fine. That's what he did when Ted's PSA was rising.

Regards,

Leah

The quick answer is that when you join the forums you get a lot of good info, most of it pt-to-pt, but you also get to hear all the gory details. Besides, you know all to well that patient advice varies in quality.

Wow, how cool is that. I remember seeing Maynard in concert, in his bright pink shirt!! The guy had hard blisters on his lips from practicing and playing eight hours or more a day.

Hi Doc,

I saw your comment about playing trombone. I used to play as well. Did you ever listen to Maynard Ferguson?? He was incredible not only on trumpet , but also on his "Super 'Bone" trombone.

I thought it might. I post quite a few comments on other sites regarding other interests. Its great to see people come out of the wood work and get involved in discussion threads. My life is fine and I am grateful for what I have. Hell I just got off the water sailing my boat and had a blast. As Alfred E Neuman would say, What me worry???

Thanks for the great comment on the family picture. They are indeed my inspiration for doing what I do...that is to make a difference by hopefully saving a family from having to suffer the loss of a loved one from such a terrible, yet treatable disease.

Thanks Doc!!
