You raise an interesting point about content moderation. Generally, I feel it's best to leave the content online since dormant topics will slip out of sight with time. However, it the content is completely off topic for this group, then it should be ok to remove it. It would be best to publish a statement somewhere describing what kind of content is not admissible in the forums and groups. This way everyone is forewarned.
The Florida 2.0 platform may be a good way to get the word out. Since it's not yet operational, as far as I know, you may want to explore other options. These include:
- From your main site and blog, link regularly to other bloggers talking about this topic. Also, be sure to comment on those posts that are relevant and include a link back to this site or to your main blog when you comment. The more bloggers link to your blog, the higher up it'll rank in both Technorati and Google search results. You may find bloggers and posts about prostate cancer here: http://technorati.com/search/prostate+cancer?authority=a7&language=en
- Speaking of Google and depending on your budget, you may consider buying some adwords, so this site will come up more prominently in search. Prostate cancer is a heavily used term and the words may be more expensive than some more unique words you may have in mind.
- Survey your members to see if any are bloggers and ask them to link back here or to your blog. For instance, for those people who indicate that they are willing to get the word out about this site (it's one of the questions you ask at signup), follow up by asking how they can help and whether they have a blog.
- There are dozens of social networks that may be useful to track, including Eons.com, the baby boomer network, and "mommyblogger" social networks such as blogher.com. For example, http://www.blogher.com/june-mens-health-month-and-mens-health-week
- Get an easy domain name and have it point to this site. This way, you'll have an easy URL to communicate to people online and offline. For example, rather than telling them to join prostatecancerinfolink.ning.com , you might tell them to join prostatecancerinfolink.com or even just prostatelink.com
- Have you emailed or mailed your personal and professional contacts? Let them know this resource is here! Ask them to sign up to your blog's email subscription as well.
There are many other low-cost ways to get the word out. While each method may not be significant, when you start using them together and adding more to the mix, your growth rate will increase.
Be sure to connect with our techie community at RefreshMiami, where you'll find designers, developers and internet marketers. Our next event is tonight and I'll add you to the mailing list.

We really are one unruly bunch. Think about what we've collected: patients, wives, partners, ministers, surgeons, internists, sex therapists, pathologists, an ethicist, a Broadway producer, an outback guide ... It's insane and it's great. And this is just half of us. The other half of the content, albeit much more structured, is on our main site.
We'd love to hear your perspective and feedback. Among the issues we face:
1) When and if to "trim" content and groups. We've figured out when to ban spammers, like the one promising Tao love secrets as cancer cure. But we have a lot of flotsam and jetsam strewn about, which makes it harder to navigate. If some administrator (ahem) were to trim away a dormant group, what would this do to blogger relations?
2) How to let our intended audience -- men at risk for prostate cancer or with prostate cancer and the people who love them -- know we are available. I wonder how the Florida 2.0 Initiative can work with us. They offer platforms. We offer content. Seems like a match to me. But how?
