I was diagnosed last Wednesday. It came as no surprise really. Not welcome for sure, but no surprise. I had watched my PSAs climb to 4.9, from 3.2 last fall. My Family Pratice doctor felt nothing on a DRE last May, but referred me to a urologist. That appt. was in July. A repeat DRE by the urologist was positive for a small nodule (longer fingers or a more practiced sense of feel, I suppose). He did a biopsy 2 weeks ago.
Given the PSA climb and the palpable nodule, I was pretty much certain of the biopsy outcome.
My inital lab reports showed cancer in 4 of 12 samples (If I remember the phone conversation accurately), with an initial Gleason of 7. Not the best, but it could've been worse too. I think he said that it was located on the right side only. I am waiting for a copy of my lab. report to be faxed to me so I can review it. It is amazing how much research one can do inside of a week!
I have been referred to the Huntsman Center, but as yet, I haven't heard from them.
Based on what I heard from the initial phone call from my urologist, and my own research, (and perhaps my own optimisim) I would hope my staging is at T2a.
As it stands right now, I am leaning towards the robotic surgery.
How are you doing? i haven't had a chance yet to really dig into peoples postings much. I am at work (Hill Air Force base)so my computer time is limited 'till i get home.
Take care.

Our (and I mean, OUR ) Petition to Make Prostate Cancer a National Priority is nearing 9,000 signatures. Let's all get our friends and family to sign, so that we might make a cool 10,000 signatures by September/Prostate Cancer Month. Go to http://www.prostatecancerpetition.org and send everyone you know to this website.

Do you by any chance know Kermit Heid? He is a survivor in Salt Lake City. He may be a good person for you to get to know.

Good. The confidence is important. Whatever we can do to help, we will try to do. Oh ... and lose the weight anyway. It probably won't affect the surgery, but it may affect the recovery because you will be fitter.

Welcome aboard, Kevin. I hope you might consider joining the Younger Men group and introducing yourself:
http://prostatecancerinfolink.ning.com/group/youngermen

Myself, I'm 51 and had my RP last August. Continence is quite good, erectile function is starting to come back (with assistance from pills), but outlook is not great - I have Gleason 9, and my post-op PSA is on the rise.

On this network, we have lots and lots of information about what to expect, how to prepare, how to follow up, etc., etc. If you have any questions, please put them out there and/or send me an e-mail.

Don't be shy Kevin ... You're the guy in the suit! You get to ask the questions if you have any at all! We're here to share whatever we know or have learned. Are you getting treated at the Huntsman Cancer Center?

Kevin - welcome to the network. Can you tell us a little more about yourself - when you were diagnosed, PSA, etc? And how you found out about this site? You will find this network a wonderful place for support from other survivors, family members, doctors and professionals. Take a look around at the groups and ongoing discussions - please consider joining the Surgery Group and Younger Men group. These guys will have a lot in common with you. Ask any questions you may have or start a discussion if you'd like input from others. There is also current information regarding PC updated on the sister site (prostatecancerinfolink.net) daily. If you have any questions or comments, please let us know. Thanks for joining us!
