About Me:
I am 49 years old, I was diagnosed with PCa in July '07. PSA 7.0 -Gleason Score, 7 (3+4) 12 biopsy samples taken, 7 were positive for cancer, 3 cores were 85-100%. Both lobes were involved, but no evidence of spread outside the prostate.

I had Robotic RP Oct. '07. Pathology: pT2cN0MX, stage II. my first post-op PSA test 11/07 0.03, PSA test 01/08 <0.1 PSA test 05/08 0.1

I got my latest PSA results from my Dr. on friday. PSA <0.1 I was worried after my last PSA test, because I thought it might indicate cancer recurrence. The latest test results relieved a lot of anxiety for me. The plan at this time is to continue monitoring PSA every three months. The next one will be at one year post-surgery.

Tony - you should be going for your blood work this week. Let me know what your results come back at. How are you doing other than being anxious?

Hi Paul;
Thanks for your feedback. I am aware of the two possibilities mentioned, and after some consideration have decided to wait until August. I am not inclined to act regardless of the results, at least at this time. I will keep you posted.

The PSA trend is certainly not what you want to see, but it's only two data points right now.
  • There's a reasonable possibility that the increase is nothing more than statistical noise like {0.01, 0.10, 0.05, 0.03, 0.09, 0.04, ...}.
  • But there's also a possibility that you're seeing the precursors of a trend like {0.01, 0.10, 0.96, 8.43, ...}, which would indicate a rapid doubling time.
  • I would think that it might be prudent to get your next PSA test sooner than August, just in case it's consistent with the second case, so you can have a bit of time to plan before you act.

Hi Paul;
thanks for your welcome and your comments. I am still wandering around this site and enjoying reading previous posts, especially some of yours.

To help clarify my statement about my recent PSA tests:
both tests: 1/08 psa >0.01, and on 5/13 psa 0.1, were done by the same lab. I request copies of all my medical tests now for my own reference. I would not have considered this a rise in PSA, except my Urologist pointed out that my recent reading was "detectable" and wanted to see what three months will bring. I am not sure that I agree with him that it is "detectable" but am curious to see what my next results will be. I am still in the learning phase of post-treatment PSA tests.

Hi Tony,
I think you and I have corresponded in a couple of e-mail lists outside of this group. It's good to see you here, and I hope we'll hear more from you.
Just double-checking on the numbers: Have you double-checked both PSA tests done using the same assay, and have you seen the actual lab results? For example, I've found that lot of times, people giving results over the phone neglect to read the "less than" sign (<). Of course, such an omission can be quite misleading when one test reports "<0.01" and second test reports "0.1" and they're both reporting the same thing: "No PSA was detected using this type of assay."

Hi Tony, from Tony,
I was a 4+3 after surgery but had a bad run with the pathology. pT3b, N0, Mx preop PSA 19.8. I will be by you this weekend, my dad lives in Temecula, and I'll be there for Dad's Day. The good news about living in a desert is that if you have to have hormone therapy, you feel like everyone else still. Always a hot flash. In the winters though, I call them "personal summers". I hope you can avoid them. But welcome. Be well and take care.
